7 1/4 SR Adams Radial Tank

£14,950.00

Freshly turned out in Southern Railway Eastleigh Olive Green – a livery not often modelled in 7 1/4” gauge today.

The engine has undergone some cosmetic works here before resale, as well as commissioning – upon completion the builder never managed to do the shake down jobs needed to properly finish the engine. Incidentally, the builder was an experienced hand having builder in excess of a dozen models where most of us are lucky to complete the odd one or two! In recent weeks it has become a firm favourite; it’s very much our kind of engine. It looks great, makes the right sort of noise out the chimney and is a good manageable size. I, for one, think it the prettiest of the 3 other radials we’ve had in so far.

The engine has been paired with an appropriate LSWR style riding truck taken from our stock of wagons.

Past paperwork and current boiler certificates provided.

Description

The LSWR 415 class is a steam tank locomotive of 4-4-2T wheel arrangement, with the trailing wheels forming the basis of its “Radial Tank” moniker. It was designed by William Adams and introduced in 1882 for service on the London and South Western Railway (LSWR). Originally rostered for suburban traffic, the class was soon displaced to the countryside by Dugald Drummond‘s M7 class. Most of the class was scrapped around the end of the First World War, and further decreases meant that all of them were due to be withdrawn by 1929. However, the class was noted for its long service on the Lyme Regis branch line, and three members of this long obsolete class were utilised on this duty until 1962, when suitable replacements became available. One has survived and can be found on the Bluebell Railway.
