7 1/4 SAR 16DA Pacific

£28,000.00

This is a mammoth sized engine, completed to an excellent commercial standard. This South African prototype was destined to operate a commercial miniature railway in Knaresborough but when that project was halted the engine, freshly completed, was only to steamed once before taking pride of place in its owner’s private museum.

There it has remained, waiting for a chance to really prove what it can do on the track. The engine is being offered for sale but will require recommissioning for its new owner. Nothing major – for example, the air pump has been removed for freeing up in the workshop.

Height 0.71m

Width over running boards: 0.48m

Maximum width point: 0.53m

Loco length: 2.1m

Tender length: 1.4m

We estimate the weight of the engine to be around 700kg for and an additional 200kg for the tender.

It would be great to add some detail to this impressive engine to give it more of a more authentic Cape Gauge feel. Do get in touch with us if you think you could give this fine bit of kit a new home!

Description

This SAR class of 16DA pacific locomotives, effectively a wide firebox version of the 1925 16D, were at Baldwin Locomotive Works, USA and Hohenzollern Works, Germany. They were deployed between Johannesburg and Kimberly, on the Union Express and the Union Limited – predecessors of the famous Blue Train.

Remarkably, six of the class survive in preservation.
