7 1/4 Quarry Hunslet ‘Elaine’

This Quarry Hunslet 0-4-0 saddle tank engine is to our mind very attractive. The open cab variety is more rare and to find an example with a professionally made copper boiler (Swindon boilers) is rarer still.

The ornate paintwork, based on full sized ‘Jonathan’, is well kept despite its age. Though it’s had a working life its patina is charming rather than distressing and you certainly wouldn’t want to spend a fortune matching what was once a professional level paint job.

The engine features two live steam injectors, prototypical salter type safety valve, whistle, blower, ejector and vacuum brakes, cylinder drain cocks and a rather nice slate wagon driving truck with additional tool storage, giving a comfy riding position.

We firmly beleive you can’t have much more fun in this hobby than with a 4″ scale open cab quarry hunslet!

Description

The locomotives built for the Welsh slate quarries by Hunslet and Co. of Leeds have become somewhat iconic in the world of steam preservation. Naturally they are a popular choice to model – with Roger Marsh or Milner designs for the larger 4″ scale and Alan Rushton’s beautiful Elidir design for the smaller 3″ scale.
