Description

The LNER Thompson B1 was a versatile mixed-traffic 4-6-0 designed by Edward Thompson for the London and North Eastern Railway during the Second World War. Introduced in 1942, the class was intended as a simple, economical locomotive capable of handling both passenger and freight duties across the network. A total of 410 were built between 1942 and 1952, including many under British Railways. Known for their reliability and ease of maintenance, B1s worked widely throughout Britain, hauling express, secondary passenger, and heavy goods trains until withdrawal in the late 1960s. Two examples, 61264 and 61306 “Mayflower”, survive in preservation.
