5” Ruston 4W Shunter (Maxitrak)
A Maxitrak built 4W shunter, built using 12V system power two individual motors. These popular models have proven their worth on garden railway across the country, though this one needs a little TLC. Upon inspection and testing the wiring was found to be faulty, there is some ‘Rust-on’ the paintwork too… nothing a wire brush and rattle can wouldn’t fix.
Description
Ruston & Hornsby four-wheel narrow-gauge shunters were compact diesel locomotives built for industrial railways. Produced from the 1930s onward, they featured simple mechanical or hydraulic transmission, robust frames and chain drive. Widely used in quarries, factories and military depots, they became ubiquitous, reliable industrial workhorses with long service lives and straightforward maintenance.
