7 1/4 GWR 14xx/58xx 0-4-2T Dart Project

The classic lines of the GWR branch line 0-4-2T are well known amongst 7 1/4” gauge enthusiasts thanks to Martin Evan’s very successful Dart design. Once considered a “big” engine for modellers to take on, this is a really well made and advanced project that could be completed and running inside a couple of months.

What you are getting is an advanced air running chassis, with brake gear and lubricator already fitted. Running boards and sanders are partially made too.

A commercially made copper boiler by John Ellis (we regard his work very highly) has been fitted, plumbed in with regulator and superheater and partially clad.

Cab and bunker platework is underway with the complicated bit (those tricky but essential pressed GWR bunker corner plates) already done. The back plates have also been formed so what is required here is a drilling, assembly and rivetting session. The last big obstacles are the water tanks and plumbing work.

Work so far has been completed to a high standard though there has been no deviation from the drawing with regards to the footplate detailing – something that a skilled modeller could improve on but not essential. There are a set of drawings included with the sale to get you off to a flying start.

Description

The GWR 58xx Series of branch line 0-4-2T was the ubiquitous small passenger engine and could be found all over the system. Engines in the 48xx series were fitted with Auto train working. In the Late 1940s, the 48xx’s were re-numbered to make room in the number series for further 2-8-0s that never came into fruition. They became class 14xx and three – 1420, 1450 and 1466 have been preserved.
