7 1/4” BR 9F Parts

Some parts for the BR 9F 2-10-0 project in 7 1/4” gauge.

Included are a set of erected main frames, with buffer beams and drag box completed. The rear footplate support bracket has also been loosely fitted. Presumably all these are to the Stockings/Vass design but there are no drawings included to reference with.

There are two cylinder castings, iron, faced and bored with valve liners pressed in some way. A single, double horn casting is included which has been skimmed.

There are 10x wheel castings, all partially machined with outer diameters, thickness cuts completed. The centres have all been bored out ready to receive axles and one casting has had the crankpin hole drilled.

Castings, laser cut parts and drawings are available from Horley Miniature Locomotives. In addition, 17D offer fully machined CNC components along with detail castings and laser cut parts which rapidly increase build time.

Description

The British Railways 9F 2-10-0 heavy goods engine was designed by Robert Riddles for the newly nationalised railways of Britain. Originally envisaged as a 2-8-2 Mikado, the 2-10-0 wheel arrangement was chosen as Riddles’ previous experience with the 2-10-0 WD austerity class was favourable. Production was split between Crewe and Swindon works, with the final locomotive 92220 “Evening Star” attaining the ominous title of the last steam locomotive to be built by British Railways in 1960.

Many enthusiasts see the design as the pinnacle of British locomotive design and of the 9 that have preserved – only 3 have yet to run.
