5″ Maid fo Kent (LMS Compound)

A well proven runner, this 2-cyl Maid of Kent has been Midland Compoundified and is offered for sale as a reliable and easy-to-run model, whilst needing a fair amount of TLC. This locomotive is finished in the Popular Midland Railway’s Crimson livery to emulate the great Compound 4-4-0s of which this model shares similar lines. The paintwork itself is starting to get a little run down, so a fresh lick of paint would set this model up to be top notch. We can paint the engine in house if required.

The Maid of Kent is a celebrated design amongst 5inch enthusiasts for being a good reliable engine in with a decent pulling power. The basic feautres of the model are:
Two outside cylinders
Stephenson’s Valve Gear
Tender
Three water feeds are fitted; Injector, Axle Pump, and a Hand pump in the tender.
A decent example and a good running engine should you want one.

Description

The London, Midland and Scottish Railway Compound 4-4-0 was a class of steam locomotive designed for passenger work.

One hundred and ninety five engines were built by the LMS, adding to the 45 Midland Railway 1000 Class, to which they were almost identical. The most obvious difference is that the driving wheel diameter was reduced from 7 ft 0 in (2.134 m) on the Midland locomotive to 6 ft 9 in (2.057 m) on the LMS version. They were given the power classification 4P.

The LMS continued the Midland numbering from 1045 to 1199 and then started in the lower block of 900–939. After nationalisation in 1948, BR added 40000 to their numbers so they became 40900–40939 and 41045–41199.
